I’ve ridden and owned horses all my life. I’ve pretty much done it all, from equitation to competitive trail in the 70’s on my Morgan mare… to trail riding for my sanity today! I even thought about a career with horses and received my BS in Animal Science from the University of New Hampshire. Saddle fit and back conformation was not even on my radar screen until I owned my first Arabian in the 80’s. He was a lovely and talented horse…a true distance horse with great potential. But he always had a sore back. I spent thousands of dollars on equipment, pads and new saddles… nothing worked. I honestly spent more money on equipment than I did on the horse. I obsessed! I volunteered hundreds of hours at competitive trail and endurance events, working with veterinarians and horsemanship judges. I finally learned that it was not just the saddle but his conformation and went on to a more suitable job.
In the early 90’s I became a sales representative and a saddle fitter for another saddle maker. I enjoyed the work and especially loved helping people navigate the mysterious world of finding a saddle that fits! All of this experience really helped me to understand what makes a good saddle. Fast forward to 2003. I was not in the market for a new saddle, but my husband Jim was and he had a Specialized Saddle demo saddle to try. I HAD to try it and when I did, I had to have one….and so did my friends! That is when Dave Kaden, the inventor of the Specialized Saddle, asked me to sell his saddles and the rest is history.
